Details

The American Buffalo Gold Proof Coin was first available in 2006 and is the first U.S. gold coin to be minted in pure 24 Karat Gold. The obverse side of the coin contains the image of a Native American man with the word Liberty along the border, while the reverse side contains an image of an American Bison. Proof coins exhibit a mirror like quality as a result of being struck repeatedly with special polished dies at high temperatures.

Design History
The American Buffalo coin was introduced to improve upon the 91.67% purity level of the American Eagle coin. Under The Presidential One Dollar Coin Act of 2005, there was a provision in place allowing for reproduction of the Indian Head nickel, and for the production of a 24-karat purity gold bullion coin. It allowed for up to 300,000 coins at face values of $50. As such, the American Buffalo became the first 24-karat 99.99% purity gold coin minted for the public.
The design of the American Buffalo reigns from the Indian Head nickel (Type I), designed by James Earle Fraser in 1913. Fraser designed the Native American depicted on the front of the coin by blending drawings of three chiefs that posed for him: Big Tree, Iron Tail, and Two Moons.
The reverse image is believed to date back to the 1910s to a bison that lived at New York Cityメs Central Park Zoo, named Black Diamond. However, it is not confirmed that Fraser used any model bison to design the coin. Black Diamond was just known to be compliant and therefore could realistically been a model for artists. The buffalo stands proudly on a mound of dirt.
There is one difference between the American Buffalo design and the original Indian Head nickel design. The American Buffalo includes the phrase モIn God We Trustヤ on the bottom of the reverse side.
